Dry fruits and Indian sweets belong together. A spoon of halwa with slivered almonds, a bowl of kheer with raisins, a clay cup of phirni with saffron on top: the dry fruits are often what people remember. Here are simple home versions of halwa, kheer and phirni, and a few ways to bring the same jars to breakfast.
First, prepare the dry fruits
- Almonds. Sliver them with a sharp knife. Or soak them in hot water, slip off the skins, then slice.
- Walnuts. Chop them roughly. Amber kernels are good value here, since they are mixed in; walnut grades explains why.
- Cashews. Halve them, or leave them whole for frying.
