Kashmiri, nounAutumn. The harvest season.
From September to November the valley changes colour. Chinar leaves turn from green to amber to deep red, walnuts are knocked from the trees and gathered in sacks, and the saffron fields of Pampore bloom purple for a few short weeks.
It is the busiest time of year for the families who grow what we sell, and the season this shop is named after.

Everything we sell comes from a short drive around Srinagar. Here is where to find it.

Saffron
The saffron town, about 15 km southeast of Srinagar. Crocus fields cover the raised karewa plateaus and bloom from late October.
Walnuts and almonds
Kashmiri walnuts are sorted by shell and by kernel colour. Here is what the names on our packs mean.

From kagaz, paper. A thin shell you can crack in your hand, with a full kernel inside.

The palest kernels, kept whole. Mild and buttery, the grade most people buy for eating as they are.

How saffron came to Kashmir
Local legend tells of two Sufi saints, Khwaja Masood Wali and Sheikh Sharif-ud-din Wali, who fell ill while travelling through the valley in the 12th century. A local chieftain cared for them, and when they recovered they gave him a single saffron bulb in thanks. The fields of Pampore are said to have grown from it.
Kashmiris call the saffron flower kong posh.

Our family has grown and traded walnuts in Kashmir for years. Every autumn we watched the best of the harvest leave the valley in unmarked sacks, sold on several times before it reached anyone’s kitchen.
Harud Valley is our way of sending it straight from Baghwanpora to your door: sorted by hand, packed the same season, and named after the time of year it all happens.
